Liposuction in Atlanta, GA

Liposuction Before and After Pictures

Do you simply want to improve your body contour? Do you have excess fat deposits that make you look disproportionately large and don’t have extra skin? Maybe you should consider undergoing liposuction. If you want to remove fat from body areas, such as your chin, neck, upper arms, breast, chest, back, abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks and many other areas, then liposuction is just what you need. The Atlanta Center for Breast and Aesthetic Surgery, led by Dr. Frederick T. Work, Jr., offers liposuction for men and women who live in and around Buckhead, Vinings, and Sandy Springs.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic body contouring procedure by which excess fat is removed from the body through a small incision and a tiny tube called a cannula. Liposuction may be performed in almost any area of the body and removes stubborn fatty deposits that have been resistant to diet and exercise.

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction is less invasive than plastic surgery and has a much shorter recovery period. It produces long-term results that are totally natural and improve the contour of your face or body by removing stubborn fatty deposits that resist weight loss efforts. Liposuction may also be recommended in combination with other procedures to add the “finishing touch” by removing extra fatty pockets that detract from an otherwise trim silhouette.

Who Are Ideal Candidates For Liposuction?

Ideal candidates for liposuction are adults who want to get rid of localized fat deposits in certain problem areas that have been resistant to diet and exercise. The ideal candidate for liposuction is close to his or her ideal weight and only needs to get rid of localized fatty deposits, not a large amount of excessive weight all over the body or large fatty deposits in the abdomen. Although liposuction permanently removes fat cells, it will not prevent you from gaining weight again, so patients should follow a healthy diet and regular exercise program. As with all cosmetic procedures, patients should be in good health with realistic expectations.

The Liposuction Procedure

To perform liposuction, small incisions are placed near the area to be suctioned. Whenever possible, the incision lines are made within the natural creases of the body so that they are inconspicuous. A thin, hollow tube is then placed through the incision so that the tip penetrates the underlying fat. The tube, called a cannula, is then connected to a suction pump and the surgeon then moves it back and forth through the fat, which is vacuumed into the tube. There are several variations of the basic liposuction technique and the one that best suits you will be determined by Dr. Work and your individual personal factors.

Liposuction Recovery

Within the first week after your surgery, your swelling will reach a peak and then begin to subside. Your stitches will be removed and you can return to non-strenuous work. Within several weeks, your bruises will begin to fade and eventually disappear. Your areas of numbness will regain sensation and you can resume normal exercise and activity as your swelling continues to subside.

What Happens If I Gain Weight After Liposuction?

Because liposuction permanently removes fat cells from a specific region of the body, you will not gain fat in that same region again, but you may gain weight in other areas. It should be understood that liposuction is a body sculpting technique that does not result in significant weight loss. Liposuction is best performed on patients who maintain a proper diet and exercise regime.

What Happens To The Skin After Liposuction?

Liposuction does not tighten loose skin, nor does it assist in developing muscle, so the outcome of the procedure will depend on the elasticity of your skin and your natural muscle definition. If you have experienced loss of skin elasticity due to excessive weight loss, damage from the elements and/or hormonal changes, such as pregnancy or menopause, liposuction may not be the best option for you. Other techniques, such as abdominoplasty and lifts may be better options.

How Do You Know How Much Fat To Remove During Liposuction?

There is a set of guidelines that surgeons use to determine how much fat to remove during a liposuction procedure. The patient is assessed in a standing position, areas of excessive fat are carefully delineated and the amount of fat to be removed is estimated and measured. For safety reasons, a maximum of 5,000 cc per procedure may be removed. In the rare instance where additional fat needs to be removed, it must be done at another time.

Will I Lose Weight From Liposuction?

Liposuction is a procedure for body contouring in patients that are relatively close to their ideal weight. It is not designed to remove large amounts of fat or result in significant weight loss. You will definitely notice a more defined and streamlined body contour and loss of inches instead of pounds. Patients see an improvement in their silhouette, as liposuction does eliminate bulges and bumps that detract from a smooth body contour. Some patients do experience a better fit in their clothing or perhaps a drop in clothing size. To maintain a lean and trim silhouette, exercise and healthy eating are recommended.

Can Liposuction Eliminate Cellulite?

Liposuction does not generally remove cellulite because cellulite is a dimpling of the skin and fat removal does not improve skin quality. Nonetheless, many patients have stated they have in fact noticed some improvement. Currently, the only procedure that eliminates cellulite is endermology, which requires several treatments of a sucking and rolling massage therapy. Endermology must be performed on a continued basis in order to maintain results.

How Does Abdominal Liposuction Different From A Tummy Tuck?

Although both procedures are used to eliminate deposits of abdominal fat, the tummy tuck surgery, or abdominoplasty, is a far more comprehensive procedure that also tightens weakened muscles, as well as removing loose and sagging skin. Overall, liposuction is a less invasive procedure with a shorter recovery period and fewer complications. However, liposuction alone will not address many of the issues that a tummy tuck addresses.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost in Atlanta?

Since liposuction is a cosmetic procedure and is generally performed for cosmetic reasons, most health insurance providers will not cover the costs. For patients who are paying out of pocket, the Atlanta Center for Breast and Aesthetic Surgery proudly offers CareCredit® and Prosper® Healthcare Lending as financing options. Our office also accepts cash, personal checks, and credit cards.
