Breast Augmentation Before and After Pictures

If you have underdeveloped breasts, unbalanced breasts or have suffered a reduction in size due to pregnancy, weight loss or aging, and desire to improve your self-image, then you should consider breast augmentation (breast enlargement, breast implant) as a means to achieve your desired look. The Atlanta Center for Breast and Aesthetic Surgery, led by Dr. Frederick T. Work, Jr., offers breast augmentation for women who live in and around Buckhead, Vinings, and Sandy Springs.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is designed to alter the shape, change the texture or enlarge the breasts with the insertion of silicone or saline implants. Today, it is one of the most common cosmetic procedures requested by women and offers long-lasting results.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

There is no reason to feel dissatisfied with the size or shape of your breasts because most women are excellent candidates for breast augmentation. Augmentation is suitable for:

  • Correcting differences in breast size.
  • Increasing volume after pregnancies.
  • Reducing sagginess after weight loss.
  • Replacing volume after a mastectomy.
  • Improving overall proportion.
  • Creating a symmetrical appearance.

Not only can a woman undergo breast augmentation to make her breasts fuller and larger, but Dr. Work can also perform a breast lift at the same time. There are great benefits of having both procedures at once, including requiring only one recovery time and avoiding repeated incisions.

Ideal Candidates For Breast Augmentation

The best candidates for breast augmentation surgery are adult women who have reached full breast development, are in general good health and who have realistic expectations about what to expect from the procedure. In general, if you have small breasts or breasts with loose skin and loss of fullness and volume, breast augmentation may be right for you.

Understanding Breast Augmentation Surgery

You will have many options to consider before undergoing your breast augmentation procedure. Relying on his skill and expertise as an experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Work will thoroughly explain all of your options and make the appropriate recommendations, guiding you through the process of selecting from the available surgical options and types of breast implants available at his Atlanta practice, including:

  • Saline or Silicone Implants: Implants come in two types and each type has its own set of benefits and advantages. Dr. Work will carefully explain each option thoroughly so that you can make the most informed decision possible.
  • The “profile” or “projection” of the Implant: Implants may have a high, medium or low profile and this factor determines how far out your breasts will project from your body.
  • The shape of the Implant: Implants may be either round or shaped like a teardrop.
  • The position of the Implant: The options are to position the implant either over or under the pectoral (chest) muscle. Dr. Work will recommend the best option for your figure.

Many women choose to combine the breast augmentation procedure with other procedures that may include a breast lift, an abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck”, body contouring with liposuction or a combination of these for the full-body “Mommy Makeover”. Dr. Work is skilled and experienced with all of these procedures and can recommend your best options.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Incisions are made to keep scars to a minimum, either underneath the breast, just above the crease, around the areola or in the armpit. Dr. Work has expertise in performing scarless endoscopic breast augmentation by utilizing a small surgical incision under the armpit resulting in no scars on the breasts. The implant is placed either underneath the chest wall muscle or directly behind the breast tissue. Scars will fade with time after the surgery.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Patients typically have discomfort for three days, after which you can shower and resume non-strenuous activities. After several weeks, most of the swelling subsides and final results can be seen. At that time, you can also resume vigorous exercise, arm movements recommended by Dr. Work and can discontinue wearing the support bra.

How Do I Know Whether I Need A Breast Lift Or Augmentation?

Many women are unhappy with the appearance of their breasts but are not certain which procedure would achieve the best results. Breast augmentation makes the breasts larger and increases volume and fullness, but it does not reduce sagging. If your breasts sag so that the nipples point downward, you may want to consider a breast lift or the very commonly performed combination of lift-augmentation. Dr. Work offers these procedures as part of a full-body Mommy Makeover, which also includes body contouring procedures, such as liposuction.

Will I Be Able To Breastfeed With Breast Implants?

This is a question of great concern for many women and, fortunately, breastfeeding is not impaired by breast implants. If you plan to have children in the future, discuss your options with Dr. Work during your consultation, as there are specific techniques he can use during the procedure that will increase your ability to breastfeed successfully after breast augmentation.

Will Breast Augmentation Take Care Of Sagging?

For women whose breasts sag only slightly, there may be a possibility to correct the drooping shape of the breasts with breast augmentation surgery alone, as it is possible for the breast implants to fill out the excess skin that has been stretched out. However, most women who want to enhance their breast size and shape, while reducing sagging altogether, will require the combined breast augmentation and breast lift. If your nipples point downward or are positioned below the breast crease, a breast lift procedure would be recommended.

How Long Will My Breast Implants Last?

Your breast implants should last for several years, however, over time, they may weaken and become more prone to complications. The lifespan of your implants may be affected by many factors, but most implants last about 10 to 20 years before they need to be replaced or removed. Dr. Work can help you decide when the right time to remove or exchange your implants or perform revisionary surgery will be.
